Why do redirect chains matter for SEO?

Each redirect hop loses about 5% of link equity. Three redirects in a chain means the final page gets ~15% less authority than a direct link.

What is the difference between 301 and 302?

301 is permanent (passes SEO value), 302 is temporary (does not pass full link equity). Use 301 for permanent URL changes.
